Forever Young

Jay-Z hit the nail on the head when he said ‘I wanna be forever young’. We all do. Unfortunately, we are all mortals and not vampires, so aging is inevitable. Good news, there are steps we can take to stay feeling (and looking) younger, for longer. A perfect example, Brett Favre. Brett Favre has been astounding football fans everywhere by not retiring. Well, to be more accurate, going in and out of retirement faster than we can keep up with. But most of the shock factor is his age. Favre has been playing in the NFL for almost two decades. This October he will be 41 years old… or should we say 41 years young, and he has signed for another season with the Vikings. That’s quite an accomplishment, considering that the average NFL player is retired by their mid-thirties.

What is it about men like Favre, and women like Demi Moore, that enables them to stay so youthful for so long? It’s not the Levi’s folks. It’s how they take care of themselves. Thanks to science we now have the knowledge to make 40 the new 20, and 60 the new 40. We have put together the best tips to keep you feeling and looking young and fit for years to come. We aren’t saying it will be easy, but if you start now, you can reverse some of the damage that has been done to your body, and ensure that your internal fountain of youth keeps flowing.

Exercise regularly. Experts agree that exercising is one of the most powerful tools to combat physical signs of aging. You can choose any form of exercise, as long as you are getting your heart rate up for thirty minutes or more, at least three days a week. Exercise is important for several reasons. One is that the heart is a muscle, and like every other muscle, it needs exercise to stay strong and in shape. A stronger heart is much less likely to deteriorate, and pumps blood throughout the body much more efficiently. Trust us, you want blood flowing easily to all organs and extremities. Exercise also keeps other muscles and bones strong, which helps to maintain mobility, even as aging progresses. Studies also show that people who regularly perform aerobic exercises live longer than people who don’t exercise regularly. All that information probably already has you thinking about the treadmill or walking the dog, but we can’t forget that exercise also affects us mentally. Exercise gets endorphins (the happy feeling hormone) flowing, and reduces stress and anxiety. We could probably write about the benefits of exercise forever, but you probably get it by now.

Eat foods that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants can prevent and slow oxidative damage to cells. Oxidation produces free radicals, which can kill cells, tear holes in cell membranes, and mutate DNA. Think of it like this, free radicals are super destructive bad guys who are out to kill your cells (and cause aging), and antioxidants are  your cells superhero. Colorful fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants, and supplements containing antioxidants (like SoTru Organic Greens, Organic Reds, Organic Chlorella, and Organic Spirulina… hint hint) are available for those of you who don’t (or won’t) eat enough fruits and veggies.

Manage stress. Studies have confirmed that stress rapidly accelerates the aging process both physically and mentally. Try meditating or yoga, both have been shown to reduce stress and improve moods. And the stretching that yoga provides will keep you limber, strengthen your bones, help keep you mobile longer, and possibly make things more interesting now (wink wink).

Get enough sleep. We know you are busy, but skimping on sleep is always a bad idea. The body repairs itself at night, and not getting enough sleep can negatively effect the way your body ages. Quality sleep allows the body to produce the human growth hormone, or HGH. HGH helps the body build muscles, strengthen bones, and thicken skin. Remember from our Boost Your Burn blog that building and stregthening muscles increases your metabolism and keeps calories burning, even while you are resting. Sleep deprivation also can cause irritability and added stress, which promotes premature aging.

These tips may not have you playing in the NFL into your forties, but they will help you stay younger for longer. STRESS FREE HOLIDAYS

The “happiest time of the year” is here. The Holiday season brings family members together, smiles to little ones faces, parties and celebrations galore. However, tagging along with all the fun is the seasonal stress of the endless to-do lists; shopping sprees for loved ones, preparing for parties, in-town relatives and keeping up with family customs… it can all take a toll on your health if you don’t slow it down. Staying Focused During the Holidays

So it’s that time of the year again.  Most of us have a million and one things going on, and our brains forgot to mentally prepare us for the holidays.  It seems like we ring in the New Year one second, and the next thing you know another one has flown by!  Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and pies are right before us.  For some of you, it’s just another season passing by.  But for most of us, it is another season full of social gatherings, sweet temptations, last minute cocktail parties, and shopping deals that can leave you waiting in line all day long!  READ MORE

Standing out from the Rest!

I don’t know if you take your vitamins or not, but I really believe that they help fill in the gaps to my sometimes not-so-great eating habits (restaurant reviewing doesn’t always entail a ton of vegetables and healthy lean proten).

But not all vitamins are created equal. That’s why I like SoTru. Their products are high quality, yet affordable. They also don’t work with third parties, so they are hands on throughout the process. READ MORE
